President Rivlin to lead 2018 March of the Living

The 3-km. march along the railway track from Auschwitz to Birkenau is traditionally held on Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is always a week ahead of Independence Day, when many of the participants, in the spirit of the March of the Living, come to Israel to celebrate the revival of a people reduced to ashes.
Before and after the march, participants visit death camps and concentration camps, as well as places where Jewish communities once flourished, and learn the history of Jewish Poland.
This coming year is particularly symbolic in that it is not only the 30th anniversary of the March of the Living and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel but also the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which coincidentally falls on Independence Day.
Although there had been uprisings in other ghettos since 1941, the Warsaw uprising was the largest single revolt and armed struggle against the Nazis by Jews, aided in part by Polish resistance fighters who helped to smuggle weapons into the ghetto.
This will be the second time for Rivlin to lead the March of the Living. The first was in 2003, during his first term as speaker of the Knesset. When the president is overseas or incapacitated for whatever reason, the speaker becomes acting president.
Thus, when president Moshe Katsav suspended himself from office during the last three months of his term while preparing for his trial, Dalia Itzik, who was then Knesset speaker, became the acting president.
March of the Living was founded in 1988 by Avraham Hirschson and Dr. Shmuel Rosenman.
Curiously, the Israeli-born Hirschson, in an interview with The Jerusalem Post in the period in which he was still active in the organization, said that he had no family connections with the Holocaust.
Rosenman, who is the chairman of the International March of the Living, believes it to be an important educational program which brings together youth and adults from around the world – not all of them Jewish – to learn about Holocaust history and, by their presence, to symbolize the opposite of the death marches forced upon Jewish prisoners by the Nazis.
Whereas the people in the marches were weak from hunger and slave labor and trudged along, often falling in their tracks, participants in the March of the Living walk proudly and confidently, with heads held high.
Over the past 29 years, the international March of the Living has attracted more than 260,000 participants from 52 states and countries, including actual Holocaust survivors and members of their families.
The most famous and most constant of these has been chairman of the Yad Vashem Council, Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi and former Ashkenazi chief rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, 80, who was a child Holocaust survivor.
One of the symbols of Auschwitz is the number indelibly tattooed on the arm. Few people who have such a tattoo make any effort to hide it. It has become a symbol of survival, whereas it was originally a mark of dehumanization.
In view of the increasing revival of antisemitism in Europe and elsewhere, Rosenman believes that the 30th anniversary March of the Living is more important than ever, and is proud that it will be led by Rivlin.
In a statement he issued Sunday announcing that he will lead the march, the president said: “Every one of us has a number on his arm – but not from Auschwitz. Although we come to Auschwitz, it is not to Auschwitz that we are marching together in the March of the Living – young people, senior army officers, soldiers, community leaders and Holocaust survivors. This is a great step in the history of the Jewish people, a people that was weaned on the memory of its roots, but remembers its sons and daughters and marches with confidence and pride toward the future.”

The new processors, produced under the code name Kaby Lake Refresh, were designed and developed mainly in Israel, together with partners from the United States.
"The eighth-generation processors are an exceptional achievement," said Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel. "We managed to deliver a significant improvement in performance without sacrificing battery life. The innovation behind the processors exemplifies how Intel, alongside its partners, is shaping the future computer experience."
The dramatic upgrade in performance of the eighth-generation processors is possible due to a new quad-core configuration, made available for laptops for the first time ever. It includes an energy-efficient microarchitecture, advanced processing technology and a wide range of silicon optimizations. The technological upgrade does not compromise battery life.  This means, for example, users can watch high quality video content in live streaming for up to 10 hours without additional charging.
The new processors present significant enhancements of multiple other features. For example, the speed of editing a photo slide is up to 48% higher than previous generations and video-editing is up to 14.7 times faster. To illustrate, this means that 45 minutes' worth of work on a five-year computer will now take only three minutes.
"This is just the beginning," Krzanich continued, adding that "the eighth-generation processors will continue to arrive in the coming months and the first desktop processors are expected to arrive this coming fall. We will then introduce a new wave of processors especially designed for business customers, equipped with a wide range of additional adaptations tailored to different market segments. The eighth-generation family will also include some of our first 10-nanometer products."

"Ugly cow"; "Fat pig"; "Worse than Hitler"-these are some of the vicious online comments a group of teenagers reads in front of the camera as part the ISCO-IL's new campaign; a campaign created to combat cyberbullying and harassment in anticipation of Safe Internet Week.
In the video, the teenagers are shocked to discover the brutal comments were written by adults, and later refuse to repeat them when their younger siblings enter the room.
"It is unfair to expect adolescents to abstain from using violent language when the conversation around them is aggressive and cruel," says Yoram Hacohen, CEO of the ISCO-IL. "The intolerant, impatient and violent discussion does not only occur online and our children learn from us how to express themselves and behave. A child who sees his parent, or any other adult, expressing themselves aggressively through a comment, post, Whatsapp message or to a teacher, doctor, other parent or friend, will most likely adopt the same behavior."
An initial analysis of the inquiries submitted to the ISCO-IL's Safe Internet Center shows that 65% of the applications deal with various forms of hurtful content including verbal violence, slander, bullying and sexual harassment.

Since decorating and creating a quality visual image are two separate concepts, a group of creative talents invested long hours to design a movie clip and a series of photos that will epitomize the train's journey along the desert scenery. This ultimately underscored the close connection between the company and the region. At this stage, all the creative forces involved in the cinematic operations got into action and had frequent discussions in the days leading to the clip's production.
Once produced, it generated a lot of interest on social media, received thousands of views, and was widely shared. Debby Communications worked to secure publicity for the campaign across local media outlets in the Negev region, aiming first and foremost to convey the clip's message to ICL employees and the communities surrounding the company's facilities.

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) raised a record $53.8 million at its annual Western Region Gala on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the landmark Beverly Hilton Hotel. The figure represents the most money raised at any single FIDF event in the organization’s history. The sold-out gala, which has become one of Los Angeles’ premier charitable events, united some 1,200 supporters from across the country to support the brave men and women of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

For the 11th year, FIDF National Board Member and major supporter Haim Saban and his wife, Cheryl, chaired the star-studded gala. Guests included prominent business, philanthropic, and political leaders and celebrated names in entertainment, fashion, sports, and technology, including Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles Sam Grundwerg; Dutch LLC CEO Serge Azria and his wife, Florence; Managing Member of R.H. Book LLC and Chairman of Jet Support Services Inc. Robert Book and his wife, Amy; Oracle Co-CEO Safra Catz; GUESS Founders Maurice and Paul Marciano; and Founder and President of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein and his wife, Joelle. Celebrity guests included Miss Israel 2013 Yityish Titi Aynaw, Gerard Butler, David Foster, Joanna Krupa, Katharine McPhee, Paul Reubens, Melissa Rivers, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Year after year, the support from the Los Angeles community for this remarkable event continues to amaze me, and this year’s gala is no exception,” said Mr. Saban. “Cheryl and I are grateful for the outpouring of support for this great cause and are deeply honored by this year’s record-breaking donations. Chairing this event for the past 11 years has been a great privilege, and we look forward to furthering FIDF’s noble mission of providing well-being and educational programs for the IDF’s brave heroes – and seeing our community welcome Israel's men and women in uniform with open arms.”

The top donation announced at the event – and the largest single gift in FIDF’s history – was $16.6 million from Oracle Co-Founder, Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison. His donation will support the construction of well-being facilities on a new training campus for the IDF’s coed infantry units.

Presiding as the evening’s master of ceremonies was Israeli actress and model Moran Atias. The event featured special performances by singer Seal, The Tenors, David Foster & Friends, and Gene Simmons.
The gala also featured a moving program, “Heroes of the IDF,” which told the stories of women combat soldiers, who play integral roles in safeguarding the State of Israel and its people. Today, 95 percent of all jobs in the IDF are open to women, who serve as pilots, infantry soldiers, artillery combat soldiers, electronic warfare specialists, and anti-aircraft and naval officers – and as many as 11 percent of combat soldiers drafted each year are women.

Funds raised at the gala will provide much-needed and well-deserved services such as academic scholarships to combat veterans, financial assistance for soldiers in-need, support for Lone Soldiers throughout their service and upon release, crucial aid for wounded veterans and the families of fallen soldiers, weeks of rest and recuperation for entire IDF units, as well as educational, cultural, and recreational facilities. The evening presented a rare and exclusive opportunity to pay tribute to the State of Israel and its brave men and women in uniform.

And we have all found out that at some stage in our career we felt unworthy or under qualified for the job we wished to pursue," said Louise Phelan, VP of Global Operations at PayPal in one the more inspirational speeches which took place the TheMarker's Technovation Conference in Tel Aviv.
Phelan’s words of wisdom resonated with the audience. Speaking from her own personal experiences and opening up about the lessons she learned throughout her career she spoke about overcoming fears, understanding that insecurities are shared by everyone, and always strive to learn from "awesome failures."
"It's ok to be nervous," she said, "because one of the benefits of being nervous is that you're new to the field and can, therefore, ask questions that others may not have asked or approach the problem differently. And the most important thing this is to always focus on the learning."
As one of the most influential women in the global hi-tech community, Phelan also specifically addressed female entrepreneurs, urging them to leave their comfort zone and challenge themselves by taking risks. "I would tell every female, each morning when you get up, instead of taking a spoonful of coffee- take a spoonful of confidence."
Phelan grew up in a family of 17 children in a village in rural Ireland. She qualified as a nurse,  a career which she never pursued, and then went back to school to study law and economics. "I did 16 interviews to get hired for the job at PayPal- I wasn't so good, the hiring conditions weren't so good," she reminisced. Today, 11 years later, Phelan manages 2,600 employees across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to lead the world's major monetary and financial shifts.
Israel’s leading business paper, TheMarker, sponsored the Technovation - one of the largest international high-tech conferences in Israel. Each year, the conference brings together some of the industry's top global entrepreneurs and influencers to discuss the emerging of new technology platforms, their potential and possible integration with tech giants and the impact this may have on our daily lives.

Anyone would feel small in the company of giants such as Miki Berkovich, Doron Jamchi, Boaz Yanai, Gur Shelef, and Omri Casspi, to name a few.
On a hot and humid evening at the Hilton Hotel in Tel Aviv, these titans came together to mark an exciting occasion in the history of Israeli sports: the hosting of the 2017 Eurobasket Championship. The local basketball scene has been abuzz since it was revealed that Israel will be hosting an event of such magnitude for the very first time. Preparations were immediately put into high gear, but starting the celebrations off properly called for a prestigious gala event.
Alongside members of the Israeli basketball's Hall of Fame, the event drew many dignitaries including Minister of Culture and Sports, Miri Regev; Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, Chairman of Israel's Basketball Association, Amiram Halevy, and many others.
Before the dignitaries were invited to give their remarks, a formal introduction was made to the elected Eurobasket Ambassadors- ten basketball legends rarely found in the same room. The Ambassadors lined up for the event were Tal Brody, Boaz Yanai, Miki Berkovich, Doron Jamchi, Gur Shelef, Tal Burstein, and Shimon Amsalem. No basketball fan could contain their excitement at the sight of these great sportsmen, who volunteered to help spread the word about the upcoming tournament.
Minister Regev had an announcement to make about an expected reduction in ticket prices. Omri Casspi, our representative in the NBA, expressed how thrilled he was to play in this prestigious European competition in front of his home crowd. Adjacent to the stage stood another surprising honorary guest: the real, original Eurobasket Cup, which will be awarded to the continental champions after the final match in Turkey. Casspi, our captain, lingered near the cup. Will he get to hold it again come September?

read more >>>In addition to the supertankers and other specialized aircrafts arriving here from all over the world, the fires of the last few days also require advanced substances that are crucial for quenching the flames. So what is the Israeli angle?
The fires raging around the country over the last few days threaten to destroy homes, trees and a great deal of property. To combat them, air tankers take off and distribute a special red substance, easily discernable in photos and videos from the fire sites.
They work like this: Fire retardants are manufactured mainly in the US, Canada, France, Spain, and Germany. Their chief purpose is not to put out the fire, but rather prevent it from spreading in the first critical stages of the extinguishing process.
The fire retardant marks 'lines of fire' to delineate the fire, making it easier for the firefighters to contain its spread and focus their efforts on a specific demarcated area. The substance is originally transparent but is dyed, often using reddish minerals, so as to enable firefighters to visually identify the borderlines of the fire zone. The fire retardant changes the way cellulose breaks down, turning flammable materials such as wood and grass into substances that do not catch fire easily.
The product, categorized chemically as a type of phosphoric acid, is considered safe, effective as well as environmentally friendly and is approved for use by the Forest Service of the US Department of Agriculture, among other institutions. In addition, the substance is approved for use by the Federal Aviation Administration and has all the required authorizations from the aircraft manufacturers. Since fire retardants undergo such rigorous inspection by the regulatory agencies worldwide, the industry includes relatively few manufacturers.
Fire retardants are essential for the environment, with an effective response to fires receiving high priority in many countries. The main long-term impact of forest fires, in addition to the damage to the natural landscape, is the fact that they turn much of the trees' biomass into carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. According to the NIFC (National Interagency Fire Center), 105,534 forest fires occur by average every year in the US alone, destroying about 500,000 acres of forest.
But where does Israel factor in? ICL is the global leader in manufacturing fire retardants, supplying the product to many firefighting organizations worldwide. ICL's list of products in this field includes products for protection against fires, as well as substances for treating hazards made of wood and paper, and a range of fire retardants for preventing the spread of wildfires. During the 2010 wildfire in the Carmel Forest, ICL donated 500 tons of fire retardants from its warehouses in Europe to Israel's firefighting forces. These were loaded onto a supertanker, as part of the effort to contain the huge fire. Last September, ICL was awarded a $6.2 million contract from the US Air Force– a major consumer of substances for combating fires—to supply 418,000 gallons of fire retardants.
